LTE or GSM cell is mainly associated with the surrounding of a single Base Station or even a part of this area. In 5G this concept has been further adapted and is no longer restricted to one BS.

In 5G Base Station cell is mostly defined by the mechanism of cell search. If synchronization and system information is the same for a specific area this means the same cell in 5G.

To synchronize, user equipment receive Primary and Secondary Synchronization Signal ( PSS & SSS). After that cell system information must be acquired by Master Information Block (MIB) and System Information Blocks ( SIB1, SIB2, …, SIB9).

To minimize the amount of information, some of the above information is broadcasted (PSS, SSS, MIB, and SIB1) and some are user-specific (SIB2- SIB9). Moreover, in NR there is a concept of SS Block (SSB) which includes PSS, SSS, and MIB. Multiple Access Points can send SSB and thus act as a single cell (see picture).

The above mechanism provides very flexible network deployment and cell coverage.
